I was well settled into a great tennis match on TV,
my favourite played Roger was on court when I received a call asking me if I could come to the local courts and fill in for one player who never showed and of course I said yes and was there in ten minutes and enjoyed the time on the court.
Came home and watched a thoroughly great soccer game from Turkey and then went to afternoon poker and my streak continues with another good win this time 150 pesos!!
I just had time after poker to come home change my shoes and go pick up Frida and we enjoyed a good walk together.......
My day was not done yet as I went into centro and met Martha, she is one of my students from two years ago and we meet once a week and just talk....her English is very good and the hour goes by very quickly..tonight for some reason she had a problem pronouncing regular, she wanted to roll her rrr’s as they do in Spanish, we laughed about it!!
So the day was a full and good one....I am very lucky my days are filled with so many great things....
Congratulations Ashley!!!
SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the 10th time in Pepperdine athletics history, a Wave has been named the West Coast Conference Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as Ashley Lahey of the Pepperdine women's tennis program achieved the feat on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the WCC's Executive Council to recognize the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award is named in honor of the conference's first full-time commissioner, Mike Gilleran.
The award caps off one of the most illustrious careers in program history, as the senior completed a trifecta of All-American honors in 2017, '18 and '20, followed by earning the 2020 ITA National Senior Player of the Year. She was the first Wave to compete in an NCAA Singles Championship final match in 2018 and pushed to the tournament quarterfinals as a freshman in 2017.
Lahey also helped lead the Waves to every possible WCC title while in Malibu, collecting four regular-season titles and three conference tournament championships (a conference tournament was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19).
Most recently, Lahey led Pepperdine to a runner-up team finish in the 2021 NCAA Championships, defeating the likes of #20 Michigan, #4 UCLA and previously undefeated #1 North Carolina for the program's first such appearance.
The Hawthorne, Calif. native totaled a career record of 115-29 for a .798 winning percentage, with 26 total wins in 2019-20 for a .962 total as Lahey compiled a 26-1 record while winning the 2019 Oracle/ITA Masters and the 2019 ITA All-American championships.
Academically, the senior has been a standout from her first day in Malibu as well, most recently earning a spot on the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-American first team as well as a four-time member of the ITA All-Academic and WCC Commissioners Gold Honor Roll for 2017-20 as well as a five-time honoree as a Pepperdine Scholar-Athlete from 2017-21. Lahey has cumulated a total GPA of 3.956 and has graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine.
The senior star served on a trip with the Pepperdine international program in 2019 where she taught classes with a group called Made in the Streets in Kenya- a program that helps local children experiencing homelessness.
Lahey is the Waves' first winner of the award since 2013 when Ana Pontes of women's soccer earned the honor.
Stay safe and healthy!!
Yashi Kochi!!
