Jaime, my friend and tour guide, came to the house at 7am Wednesday morning to pick us up and take us on a tour to Mexico City and then to drop Janet and Malc off at the airport.
the third largest pyramid in the world.
It was so great to have Jaime explain the history and culture and story of the pyramids.
This is the pyramid of the moon about 145 feet high, we were able to climb to the top of the steps but not any further.
This is an interesting photo and story and again would have gone unknown if not for Jaime. The technology at this time was amazing. We stood where the photo was taken and we clapped our hands and the sound echoing back sounded like a bird. Jaime said this phenomena has been found in other areas of Mexico.
Not sure if this is what I understood Jaime to say but if you look at this photo the third tier of the steps are a little left off centre and this was done on purpose to take into account the rotation of the earth, but the top steps are perfectly in line.
May have to double click to enlarge this one above… This is my destination the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, over 250 feet, the third highest pyramid in the world.
Made it and what an incredible view!!
On of the exhibits in the Museum.
We then left for down town Mexico City, I tried to capture some of the hills filled with houses.
We were soon parked down town and our first stop was the Basilica. Inside this church was just beautiful.
The Virgin of Guadeloupe is very special in the Mexican culture and this is where millions of people pilgrimage to pay homage to the statue.
What I didn’t know was the city centre as is now was originally a huge lake and the city was built on top. Now some of the buildings are sinking and restoration is taking place which is true of the church pictured here.
Outside the church lots of festivities take place.
Some of the sights on the drive to our down town hotel. The weather was overcast and gloomy.
We soon arrived at the lovely hotel.
After a short rest we went out for supper and Jaime took us on a short walk. Considering this city is one of the largest in the world, we felt safe and enjoyed the walk.
We had to have the last game of scrabble and I won’t tell you who won..
OK I WILL!!!!!!!
This morning we met up for breakfast at 8am in a lovely restaurant.
This is my breakfast Just kidding this was Jaime’s. I went onto the first balcony to take these photos of Malc counting his money.
We then did a walking tour of the historical down town core. The main Cathedral, never been inside such a huge and wonderful church. There was a service taking place so we were not allowed into the main hall but we did get the pleasure of hearing the choir singing.
Other buildings in the perimeter of the square, there was a huge protest going on.
The slope on the roof of the white building shows the subsidence.
Pyramids found around 30 years ago and right off the main square.
The main Post Office and the Theatre.
Soon it was time to get Janet and Malc to the airport so here we were 13 days ago
and now after a wonderful time together, meeting wonderful people, seeing incredible vistas it is time to say goodbye.Jaime and I drove home and arrived back home around 3pm.
It was a fabulous visit to the big city a little short but did see and learn a great deal about the old and new Mexico.
The house feels a little empty but at least now I can sit in my arm chair again.
I wish you both a safe and happy flight home and enjoyed the next few days with the family, love you both.
Listening to the Canucks getting waxed by my favourite hockey team the Phoenix Coyotes coached by my hero No. 99….
