Janet and Malc bid farewell….

Jaime, my friend and tour guide, came to the house at 7am Wednesday morning to pick us up and take us on a tour to Mexico City and then to drop Janet and Malc off at the airport.

Three hours later we were atIMG_2660

the third largest pyramid in the world.

It was so great to have JaimeIMG_2663 explain the history and culture and story of the pyramids.IMG_2666

This is the pyramid of the moon about 145 feet high, we were able to climb to the top of the steps but not any further.IMG_2680

The view from the pyramidIMG_2681

IMG_2683  This is an interesting photo and story and again would have gone unknown if not for Jaime.  The technology at this time was amazing.  We stood where the photo was taken and we clapped our hands and the sound echoing back sounded like a bird.  Jaime said this phenomena has been found in other areas of Mexico.

Not sure if this is what I understood Jaime to say but if you look at this photo the third tier of the steps are a little left off centre and this was done on purpose to take into account the rotation of the earth, but the top steps are perfectly in line.IMG_2697

IMG_2712 Made it and what an incredible view!!IMG_2709

We then left for down town Mexico City, I tried to capture some of the hills filled with houses.IMG_2728

We were soon parked down town and our first stop was the Basilica.IMG_2747 Inside this church was just beautiful.IMG_2733

The Virgin of Guadeloupe is very special in the Mexican culture and this is where millions of people pilgrimage to pay homage to the statue.IMG_2735

IMG_2736 What I didn’t know was the city centre as is now was originally a huge lake and the city was built on top.  Now some of the buildings are sinking and restoration is taking place which is true of the church pictured here.IMG_2739

Outside the church lots of festivities take place.IMG_2742

Some of the sights on the drive to our down town hotel.  The weather was overcast and gloomy.IMG_2754

We soon arrived at the lovely hotel.IMG_2767

After a short rest we went out for supper and Jaime took us on a short walk.  Considering this city is one of the largest in the world, we felt safe and enjoyed the walk.

We had to have the last game of scrabble and I won’t tell you who won..

OK   I WILL!!!!!!!

This morning we met up for breakfast at 8am in a lovely restaurant.IMG_2775

This is my breakfastIMG_2776 Just kidding this was Jaime’s.  I went onto the first balcony to take these photos of Malc counting his money.IMG_2778

IMG_2781

We then did a walking tour of the historical down town core.IMG_2788 The main Cathedral, never been inside such a huge and wonderful church.  There was a service taking place so we were not allowed into the main hall but we did get the pleasure of hearing the choir singing.IMG_2799 IMG_2801

and now after a wonderful time together, meeting wonderful people, seeing incredible vistas it is time to say goodbye.IMG_2831Jaime and I drove home and arrived back home around 3pm.

It was a fabulous visit to the big city a little short but did see and learn a great deal about the old and new Mexico.

The house feels a little empty but at least now I can sit in my arm chair again.

I wish you both  a safe and happy flight home and enjoyed the next few days with the family, love you both.

Listening to the Canucks getting waxed by my favourite hockey team the Phoenix Coyotes coached by my hero No. 99….
