Friday 5th October 2018......an easy day!!!

I am always amazed how quickly the weeks go by Friday already.......it was another easy but productive day starting out by going with Gracie to take her dogs for a walk....I am pretty good at finding open spaces in town and in the countryside and this morning was a huge play area for them very close to town....just perfect!

Came home and got down to some serious cooking ....two dishes the first one is a chicken dish which is bubbling away in the crock pot and the second dish I am trying for the first time is Shepherds Pie...will see how it turns out tonight!

Gracie’s Spanish teacher, Lillia has a really good family friend who lives in one of the campos in very sparse conditions and she needs a few things for her small place......Gracie wants to help to pay for those things and so do I but I also wanted to go out and see where they live and just what they need so at  5 pm I met Lillia and her son and they drove me out to the campo......

It is hard to describe some of the family problems that they have and their living conditions and what they need....there is a 95 year old bed ridden Mom and her two daughters  and son in law urgently needing a few things which we will purchase for them.......one thing is a sink, they do not have running water but a hose.  They also need some shelves and cupboards so we can get those at a reasonable cost.....

Hard to realize how some people have to live so Gracie and I are both really happy to be able to help in a little way!!!  This will also be a great story to tell my class on Wednesday for the pay it forward!!!

The Shepherd’s pie was good!!!!

Now going to watch a movie....

Have a great safe and happy weekend!!

OK, you are not going to get off that easy! What is your recipe? I believe it is an Irish dish, and I think it has mashed potatoes on top.

We love shepherd's pie, one of our favourite winter dishes. Actually, since I make it with ground beef, it's cottage pie... Nice to be helping out a family in need!

Peter, I've been reading Shepard's Pie recipes on the internet. It seems that the pie can be made with so many different ground meats (except maybe fish). My information says that the traditional British/Irish recipe calls for lamb. Choice of the different seasonings for the meat is up to the chef. Makes me hungry just talking about it.

I think you are right with lamb but that is hard to get here......all sounds good..lp

The secret to good shepards pie is when you put it under the broiler to brown; then let it sit for ten minutes.
Remember, it's all been cooked.
Shalom.

Unknown, yes, with the butter and cream in the potatoes, ithe pie should brown nicely. To fuse together the flavor of the meat with the gravy must be the main reason for the oven baking time.

We don't readily get lamb here in South Carolina either. We can ask the grocery store butcher for it, but it takes a couple of days for the butcher to process your order, and it is never on sale.
