Saturday 2 nd June 2018... a day of rest!!

Bit of a lazy day today..

Went to the nice town of Beverley  this morning it is about a ten minute drive away..

Beverley's charming streets and courtyards continue to attract history buffs, music lovers, racegoers and shoppers alike.

Landmarks include the gothic Beverley Minster - famous for its 13th century stone carvings and stained glass - and the 15th century North Bar which divides impressive Georgian streets containing a great number of listed buildings.

Take advantage of the upmarket shopping experience and browse high street names independent shops,  or wander around the traditional Saturday market  ideal for picking up local produce and crafts.

Some of Britain’s best flat racing takes place at the famous racecourse which has been part of the town’s lifeblood since the 16th century providing a warm welcome to everyone throughtout the season.

Beverley also boasts quirky cafes, acclaimed restaurants and historic pubs, and a visit wouldn’t be complete without a stroll on the Westwood.

I just wondered around the streets and went inside the glorious Cathedral...

This afternoon I watched live tennis from Paris and this evening Sam and Ian and I went to the local community centre and watched and listened to two local choirs perform.....they were quite talented and it made for a nice evening.

Good to have a slow day for a change!!

Les, may I ask, what is flat racing? I noticed it in your description of Beverley. You and I speak the same language, but sometime certain terminology is not familiar to me. One year in the past when you were visiting Malc and Janet, you took a photo of a guy driving a cart and explained to me that he was a ragbone and had to explained further that a ragbone was a person who collected junk.

Just so many churches and cathedrals in England which still stand from a time so long ago, it is hard to get my head around how really old they are. Since the British built Charleston beginning in the 1600s, known here as the "holy city," so much of the architecture in Beverley looks like Charleston, for example, homes with common walls have doors which open up right onto the city's sidewalk. The cathedrals in England are built larger than the churches and cathedrals built by the British in downtown Charleston. Of course, the reason for that has to be that the peninsula of Charleston is so small in land area, and everything had to be built to fit on those tiny streets.

I'm checking Beach into hospital Monday morning for his second knee replacement; he is not quite as nervous this time as he now knows what to expect. So you may call me Nurse Dee for awhile. He has a very good orthopedic surgeon, Dr Stem, but he is so very young and seems to know well his field of medicine since all he does are knee replacements.

Good wishes for Beach tomorrow......and I think the churches here are so different from Spain and Mexico and I always marvel at the design and the actual building labor wise...

Horse racing is very popular in this area and flat racing is just racing on the grass no jumps involved..where I was born in Doncaster there is a huge race course and there a very prestigious race but it was over Hugh jumps....best wishes les
