Thursday 21st March 2019.....Spring!!!

First day of Spring...

Today is the official first day of Spring!!

It may not feel like it, but today is the official first day of Spring.

Also known as the Vernal Equinox, today marks the time of year when day and night are most nearly equal (roughly 12 hours each). The spring equinox will officially occur at 5:58 p.m. ET (4:48 p.m. CT). It will signal the astronomical start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of fall in the Southern.

The Spring Equinox always falls on March 19, 20 or 21.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, today is the day the sun crosses south to north over the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. If you were standing on the equator, the sun would pass directly overhead as it makes its way north.

After today, the Northern Hemisphere will tilt towards the sun, giving us longer, sunnier and – thankfully – warmer days.

Equinoxes are the only two times a year that sun only rises due east and sets due west.

Can you balance a raw egg on its end on the equinox?

Folklore tell us that you can balance a raw egg on its end on the equinox, something attributed to the Earth’s “balance” on that day.

While it sounds like a fun activity, there’s no basis in fact that egg balancing is any easier on the equinox, according to NASA. The U.S. space agency conducted an unscientific experiment that found it was no easier to balance an egg on the equinox than any other day. What did make it easier was finding an egg with small bumps on its shell, something that NASA said made the “seemingly impossible task achievable.”

and a beautiful sunny and warm morning for tennis...played with a couple of new players this morning which is always fun.....

Had to go do some errands around town this morning and then went over to Gracie’s where we sat outside and played cards.....no comment on that outcome!!

Then I BBQ two steaks and we had a lovely dinner....

Latest photo of Gracie’s Grandchildren....

Just a quiet day, I don’t get too many of those!!!

Have not mentioned Ashley in a while.....she is doing really well in her second year at Pepperdine..ranked No.1!!

She is also doing so well in her studies and is going to Africa this summer for a practicum.....

MALIBU, Calif. – Ashley Lahey and Daria Kuczer of the #7 Pepperdine women's tennis team swept the West Coast Conference weekly honors for helping the Waves to wins against three ranked opponents last week, including top-10 victories over #6 UCLA and #8 Texas.  The weekly honor was announced on Tuesday by the league office.

Ashley Lahey earned both singles and doubles honors, while Daria Kuczer was also in the doubles honors.  This is the fourth honor for both singles and doubles for the Waves.  It is the first honor for Kuczer in her career.  Lahey has received singles honors on six occasions and doubles three times throughout her career.

In the No. 1 singles position, #45 Lahey came to play last week, winning all of her matches and helping the Waves to the three outstanding victories.  First, she finished first in the 4-0 sweep over #6 UCLA, defeating #64 Jada Hart 6-3, 6-4 to put the Waves up 2-0 en route to the win.  It was the Waves first sweep over UCLA in program history.  Then, she downed Victoria Smirnova 7-6 (3), 6-2 in Pepperdine's 4-2 win over #41 Rice.  In the final match of the weekend, another upset win – this time over #8 Texas on the road – she put down #60 Bianca Turati with a 6-4, 6-1 final mark to put the Waves up 3-0 and give them an opportunity to clinch.

In the No. 2 doubles position, Lahey and Kuczer were instrumental Waves success throughout the weekend.  First, the pair clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 bout against Gabby Andrews and Alaina Miller of #6 UCLA.  The point helped the Waves gain the advantage into singles and move towards the team's first sweep over UCLA in program history.  In the 4-2 win over #41 Rice, the duo bested Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova 7-5 to even the doubles score and propel Pepperdine to the doubles point.  In the final Waves' win of the week – the upset over Texas – the duo finished first in doubles, collecting a commanding 6-1 win over #67 Fernanda Labrana and Bojana Markovic, pushing their team to the doubles point and a 5-2 Waves win.

They have a son, Luke, and Ian told me the story about him as a young boy he always wanted to be a sports commentator and Ian said at 7 and 8 years of age at the dinner table he would pick up a bottle of ketchup pretend it was a microphone and comment on  the dinner, he said he was very good at this.  Well through the years Luke followed his dream and became a radio sports broadcaster and won many awards…a few years ago he married a Canadian girl and moved to Toronto where he became involved with the Toronto Football club and I received an e mail from Ian a few weeks ago telling me that Luke had been offered a job at TSN doing the soccer broadcasts…so imagine my delight when I turn onto the game this afternoon and there is Luke, he is on the left!!!

Monday 18th March 2019...a holiday!!!

Today is his birthday and a National holiday!!

Benito Juárez Day

Commemorated on the third Monday in March, this holiday celebrates Benito Juárez, President of Mexico from 1857 to 1872. He was the first indigenous man to hold the country’s highest political office. Juárez is considered a national hero as he resisted the French occupation, led the country into the modern world and restored the republic. On Benito Juárez Day, most businesses close and many travel for the long weekend. Political events and celebrations take place across the country, including in San Pablo Guelatao, Juarez’s hometown.

I was sitting up in bed with my tea and computer at 7.30 am when I heard the familiar swoosh of hot air...grabbed my camera went to my roof top terrace and snapped these two!!!!

What a start to the morning.....

Everything was closed today no gym session...no English class....so I spent a lot of the day relaxing and doing some chores around the casita...

Lost another game of cards tonight to Gracie...why do I do it you may ask??

Sunday 17th March 2019....you know what day it is!!!!

I would like to wish all my Irish friends a wonderful day today!!!!

The History Of Saint Patrick’s Day

March 15, 2019 123Dentist Community, Entertainment, Seasonal

Most people celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day this March 17th won’t be aware of the true origins of the holiday, or even its true meaning. Aside from celebrating the Irish, the colour green and whatever shamrock shakes are made from, what is it really about? How did it evolve into the holiday we celebrate today?

We wanted to take a look at the history and evolution of St. Paddy’s Day and hopefully give you and your friends some great talking points when you enjoy that green coloured beer at the neighbourhood Irish Pub.

It’s A Religious Holiday

Given the name of the holiday, it might seem obvious that Saint Patrick was Christian, but most people associate it with celebrating Irish culture, rather than Catholicism. Truth be told, that’s not where it began. Saint Patrick was a prominent bishop and missionary in Ireland near the end of the Roman empire in the mid to late 5th century AD.

Known as the Patron Saint Of Ireland and the Apostle Of Ireland, Patrick was instrumental in bringing the Roman Catholic beliefs to Ireland and in subsequent years, Saint Patrick’s Day became a day to commemorate Catholicism in Ireland. Originally, it was a day of feasting and celebration held every year on the day of St. Patrick’s death, although until the 1700s, the holiday didn’t exist in any formal capacity.

Over the years, there has been a great deal of mythologizing of St. Patrick in history.

Ireland Had No Snakes

One of the more popular myths about St. Patrick’s Day is that he drove all the snakes from Ireland after they attacked him during a 40 day fast. Legend said he drove all the snakes into the sea and that is why there are no slithering serpents there today.

We now know that there were never any snakes in Ireland. One writer hypothesized that the legends about the snakes actually served as a metaphor for Druidic symbols in Ireland, and of St. Patrick’s eradication of the traditions that preceded Catholicism in Ireland.

Saint Patrick Wasn’t Irish

In truth, St. Patrick was taken from his home, either in Britain, Wales or elsewhere, and became a slave to pirates for 6 years. When he was freed, he entered the clergy and later returned to Ireland as a missionary to begin his work.

While he was not in fact Irish by birth, he embodied the spirit of Ireland and a love for the country.

Somewhat ironically, St. Patrick was an immigrant to Ireland the same way so many Irish would later become immigrants in the United States, where modern St. Patrick’s Day was born.

Green Isn’t That Significant To St. Patrick

St. Patrick never wore green according to most accounts, but he did use the Irish Shamrock to explain christian symbols and ideas like the Holy Trinity to his followers.

The shamrock itself held meaning long before Catholicism made its way to Ireland, even in Druid rituals and stories. The significance was the three prongs, as three is a number with significance in Pagan traditions. Green was a colour associated with the shamrock and certain groups in Ireland, and in the mid-1700s it fell out of fashion.

Replaced by blue, the colour then most commonly associated with St. Patrick, it wasn’t until another group of Irish Protestants rebelled against the British and reclaimed green as their symbol. “Wearing the Green” came from a popular theme song for the rebellion and has been synonymous with Irish nationalism ever since.

The Modern Holiday Is American

Well, Irish-American. The very first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Boston in 1737, as a celebration of Irish culture in the colonies. It later spread in popularity to Dublin and other American cities, and is now popular in other countries, including many in Europe and even Asia.

In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday and has been since the beginning of the 20th century, but the first parade wasn’t held in its honour until the 1930s.

In the mid-1990s Ireland began to use St. Patrick’s Day to promote tourism and cultural identity, some say to reclaim the holiday from the United States where it has become a bit tacky. Others in Ireland and even in the US are concerned that the holiday has become too secular.

Today St. Patrick isn’t much of a thought at all in our celebrations of the famous holiday. Mostly we drink Guinness beer and enjoy dressing like Leprechauns. Sure there is the traditional Celtic music, dancing and dress to provide some touches of authenticity, but those touches are largely absent in Ireland’s own celebrations. What St. Patrick’s Day has become now is largely symbolic, although it’s still a great excuse to have some fun while spending time with friends.

Had a very slow and relaxing day....Gracie and I went a few miles out of town to her favourite garden outlet where she purchased a few plants...

We had the dogs with us so we took them on a small hill side walk....

Are you sitting down????

Saturday 16th March 2019......two years!!

Last night at the movie, which was a great show based in England with English accents...at one point I just cracked up and Gracie gave me the look because she did not understand...one of the actors said the two words below!!!  Gordon Bennett....I had not heard that for many many years...here is the explanation!!

Gordon Bennett !

It is commonly believed that this expression has its origins in the popularity of James Gordon-Bennett, Jr..

His father, born in Scotland in 1795, emigrated to the US to become a journalist and subsequently founded the 'New York Herald' in 1835. The many innovations he established within newspaper publishing, including European correspondents, illustrated news articles, the joint founding of The Associated Press (1848) and the first major use of the telegraph for news, led to a successful news empire which amassed considerable wealth.

It was his son, born in 1841 and known as Gordon-Bennett, who really captured the attention of the US and European populace. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he took every opportunity to live life as a playboy; his wild lifestyle and extravagant spending gained him notoriety in high society. On one occasion, at a New Year's party (1877) being held by his fiancee's father, he got so stupifyingly drunk as to mistake the fireplace for a toilet and proceeded to urinate in front of his prospective in-laws and their guests. Other tales include the occasion when, annoyed by the bulky roll of money in his back pocket, he burnt the lot in an impetuous fit. There are many more tales of his outrageous and extravagant behaviour, however not all cast him in a bad light, such as the numerous times he would donate large sums of money to charities.

He took over the management of the Herald in 1867, and proceeded to invest funds in newsworthy ventures. His funding included the expedition by Stanley to Africa, in search of Dr. David Livingstone, and an ill fated attempt to explore the North Pole and Arctic region by G.W. De Long in the years between 1879 and 1881. The 'Jeanette' expedition, as the Arctic trip was known, failed miserably and led to the subsequent death, via starvation, of De Long and 19 fellow crew members. There are several islands in Siberia that bear Bennett's name.

Gordon-Bennett was particularly partial to sports, being credited with introducing polo to the United States, his interests included yachting, in which he established the James Gordon-Bennett Cup for international races. Trophies were similarly given for balloon and aeroplane racing, of which the Gordon-Bennett balloon race still exists. As further testament to his involvement in the various racing arenas, it was in 1904 that the Gordon-Bennett Motor Car Road Racing Trials were first run on the Isle of Man, which was the precursor to the world famous TT races, currently still held there.

From 1877 he lived in Europe, mainly on his 301 foot yacht, the Lysistrata, from where he administered the running of the New York Herald. He died in France in May 1918, aged 78.

The use of James Gordon-Bennett's name as an expletive possibly bears relation to his outrageous lifestyle and involvement in newsworthy stunts. Imagine opening your daily newspaper and reading yet another news item telling you of his latest antics, and as you begin to express incredulity with a "God Almighty", you restrain your publically unacceptable language and instead say.....  GORDON-BENNETT!

Great two hours of tennis again this morning and afterwards my usual trip to the Saturday Market!!

Late in the afternoon I went over to Gracie’s..she is feeling better from the dental work.

Today marks our anniversary..it is two years ago that I first met her...so I bought her some beautiful lilies and she proceeded to beat me yet again at cards!!!

Then it was time for breakfast and I had no eggs...so what does one do in Mexico when you run out of eggs??

You walk maybe 50 yards to the nearest Mum and Pop store...take your empty egg container and pay 11 pesos for 6 eggs!!!!

Jen the owner of the house has done a great job revamping the garden outside my casita.....

Looks great!!

My first appointment today was with a Dermatologist.....Gracie went four weeks ago and suggested I go so I went to see Dr.Archer this morning...she gave me a complete and thorough check up...I have some little bumps that I thought would be an issue but she said that I was in very good shape with no problems except a little bump on my ear which she froze and removed.....told me to remember sunscreen on my ears and neck and to come back in one year!!!

I was impressed with her and her cost was 1200 pesos very reasonable!!

From there I went to meet my tennis partner Carolyn and we had lunch.......we got caught up on all our different travels..she has just got back from the Far East....good to see her again after about seven weeks of not playing tennis together..we fix that next Tuesday with our regular foursome!!!

Thursday 14th March 2019.....those trees!!!!

Back on the tennis courts this morning and very happy to report my new shoes were a perfect fit...it was a good two hours but I notice how much hotter it is now..this is really May weather we are getting already!!

I then went to get Gracie and take her to her dental appointment..she had a root canal and was in the chair over two hours.....we brought the dogs and I took them for a long walk down to the Botanical gardens...the water level is way down!!

I then took them to this amazing overlook of the city with the Jacaranda trees in full bloom!!

Origins

The Jacaranda is native to South America, specifically Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, as well as Mexico and Central America. The flowering tree also has been introduced to Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and parts of the United States. Particularly in Australia and America, the Jacaranda is a popular choice for public spaces; the trees are often found lining streets or adorning parks.

Amazonian Myth

According to an Amazon legend, a beautiful bird named Mitu landed atop a Jacarnda tree bringing with him a lovely woman. The woman, who was actually a priestess of the moon, descended from the tree and lived among the villagers, sharing with them her knowledge and ethics. Having fulfilled her mission, she returned back to the tree adorned in Jacaranda blooms and ascended to the heavens where she united with her soul mate, the son of the sun.

Lore for Students

Because the Jacaranda tree is associated with the Amazonian moon goddess who is known for her wisdom, the trees are often found planted on university campuses. In Australia, in particular, there are academic superstitions that have grown up around the tree. For example, a student is considered unlikely to do well on final exams if he hasn’t started studying for them by the time the Jacaranda trees are in bloom. But there are conflicting meanings for what it means when a Jacaranda bloom falls on a student’s head. One says it's good luck; another says it's bad luck unless the bloom is caught in the right hand.

Luck

Although they don’t have as storied a history, Jacaranda trees have a bit of legend in the United States as well. If a Jacaranda bloom falls on your head, it’s considered good luck. The blossoms of the Jacaranda also are associated with rebirth and the magic of spring.

They are so pretty!!

Gracie was glad to leave the dentist office she has a little discomfort and is going to stay home the rest of the day and take it easy!

I came home cooked a nice chicken dinner with enough for two more meals and then went to my English class..I am making up for missing on Monday!!

Only two students showed up and we just sat and talked about their lives, their dreams!!

Then did some writing of sentences one true and one false and we had to guess which....

Diane lives forty miles away in Delores Hidalgo and comes and goes from class on the bus....dedication!!!

Saul is in his last year of high school before he goes off to University to study engineering!!

Played more word games and before I know it is time to leave.....they are so good and I really enjoy being with them!!

Tonight a long hot shower tea and I think I might be able to find some Trader Joe ginger snaps to go with that tea 🍵!!
