Monday 21st August 2017...a day trip to.....

Mineral de Pozos about a one hour drive from San Miguel...come along with Gracie and myself to this cool town....

Certain workers trapped in a mining facility at the Ex Hacienda de Santa Brígida in the town of Mineral de Pozos in Guanajuato claimed that a light appeared mysteriously in the darkness and signaled an escape route. Then, when the last mine of this town closed in 1927, there was no magic light that would save Mineral de Pozos and soon became one of the ghost towns derived from mining.

In its time of greatest prosperity, that is, in the last part of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, Mineral de Pozos came to be considered as the most important mining community of the state, due to the abundant extraction of copper, silver, gold , Bronze, mercury and aluminum that was made there. Everything was said and satisfactions for the inhabitants of the town, until, according to a certain legend, due to the conflicts of the Cristeros, the priest of Mineral de Wells was assassinated. Since then, a curse seemed to fall on the site and as the mines flooded, people had to emigrate to other parts of Mexico. It is estimated that of 70,000 inhabitants, after this debacle, only 200 were left and a site in ruins.

Fortunately 1982 began an attempt to recover Mineral de Pozos, to be included in the National Treasury program. Since then people have begun to return and today the town has 4,000 inhabitants. Whoever wanders today through this recently-named Pueblo Magico, stands a bohemian atmosphere of cobbled streets, old buildings full of anecdotes, art galleries, typical gastronomy and pre-Hispanic instruments. Because of its suggestive projection of national and international visitors, some people think that Mineral de Pozos has the potential to transform into the following San Miguel de Allende, by equating it with attractions and tourism potential.

Everywhere are the ruins showing up perfectly against the vibrant blue sky!!

I am sure on the weekends the town is a lot more alive with tourists but today very quiet but also very clean and tidy!!

Just outside of town is a small Lavender farm which is open to the public...

After a really nice lunch we went a bit into the country to see some of the old ruins of the Haciendas....

We watched for the eclipse but saw nothing......

A nice day out and a big change from the busy streets of San Miguel!!!
