DAY 5!!!

My last day at the beach!!!!!!!

My plans were to take it easy, I know I have been doing that since I arrived......anyway just stayed around the casita this morning reading, packing a little and just enjoying the weather and the views!!

I had seen a huge white cross on top of a hill just outside of town and I wanted to see if I could hike up there so I packed up three litres of drink and away I went....

There it is circled in red

and with my trusty zoom

I got directions and soon found the path passed a really nice sports complex and up to the cross!!

Great views of the bay and the town...

circled is the beach where I shall be in about one hour....

Came down a different route and on to the beach...a little bit more action today but only a little...

I walked right to the far end of the beach where the photo from the cross zoomed in and now looking back at the cross

with zoom!!

I found a great place to set my stuff and had this whole beach to myself...

I swam for a long time keeping an eye for the occasional huge monster wave..I do enjoy the ocean....

Around 4.00 pm I cam back home and sat by the pool reading and swimming and watching the people below

and then again with zoom...

My last sunset was lovely!!!!!

Had a light supper a lovely cool shower and watched a movie and now ready for bed......

I am all packed and I shall leave when ever I wake up..I have a drive of just over 7 hours but have lots of good snacks mega drinks, my music and much to the chagrin of Heather and Linda my Mexican cruise control(That is a whole another story for some other time but Larry in Kelowna knows what I am talking about!!!!!)!!!!!

This was a wonderful idea and a lucky encounter finding such a great place to stay if you need the contact information about the casita e mail me.......

Monday 6th March 2017...one more sleep!!

Just spent most of the day chilling and getting ready for my trip tomorrow..I am off to a tiny fishing village called Caleta de Campos in the State of Michoacan!!

I return Sunday and this trip will be wonderful for me I miss the ocean..I have a great place to stay right on the ocean and miles of virgin beaches to walk...I hope to be able to use my Internet to stick to do the blog but if not check back Sunday to see what trouble I was up to!!!!

Had another great English class tonight...their homework was to write a story and read it out to us all and we had to guess if the story was true or false......they did amazing stories and one of them told of this story below amazing we all guessed false but as you read it was true!!!!

Giant! Space! Vegetables!

“Giant space vegetables ‘could feed the world’“, says the Telegraph, according to which “it is thought the near zero gravity conditions in space result in super-sized fruit and vegetables with a higher vitamin content. … Struggling for space in giant hothouses at the Guandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences are 21lb (9.5kg) tomatoes and enormous watermelons.”
That’s interesting, but some skepticism may be appropriated. They do mention a more down-to-earth value of “harvests which are ten to 20 per cent higher than normal”, a big difference from the “ten times their normal size and weighing more than an average man” vegetables claimed in the same news item. What’s actually going on here? Are giant space vegetables really our salvation?
Well, actually giant vegetables are nothing alien, though this is a perfect excuse to tell the story of a famous Mexican case of the 1970s. It all happened in Valle de Santiago, where a simple peasant, José Carmen García Martínez, managed to harvest giant vegetables, from lettuce to onions, of a truly gigantic size.
Amid the oil crisis of the time (coincidence?), this was a big bizarre news item, and many TV crews flocked to see the huge vegetables. That included even the “Ripley’s Believe it… or not!” original TV series crew, from where many will perhaps remembers this.
It would be only an undefined “mystery” if it wasn’t for the involvement of another pal, one Óscar Arredondo Ramírez. The man had a photo shop (coincidence?) in Valle de Santiago, and was no stranger to bizarre things, having managed to take pictures of UFOs and Chac, the Mexican Nessie.
Arredondo advised Carmen García to tell that the “secret formula” to the giant vegetables came from… you guessed it, aliens (it would be hard to believe they came from Chac, the Mexican Nessie). It somehow also involved astrology, as the secret was to make special astrological charts for each seed, and plant them on exact times and dates determined by the stars. Spurious as it was, many took it seriously. Because the giant vegetables were a fact.
Despite claiming initially that the complete details of the secret formula could not be disclosed as “it would only make the rich, richer”, on 1977 Arredondo and Carmen García offered to share their secret with the National Agriculture Secretary with two conditions: the creation of a national park on Valle de Santiago and the construction of a local agriculture school.
On the same year, Arredondo also proposed an experiment that was undertaken. A field was divided and half had vegetables cultivated with conventional techniques, and the other half applied the “secret alien formula” for the giant vegetables. Would this be the beginning of a New Alien Green Revolution?
Sadly, not. On April 1978 the harvest came in. The conventional agronomists had a productivity more than twenty times higher than the alien followers. The Secretary immediately lost interest on their secret formula.
It did produce a few giant vegetables, nevertheless, but they were almost all water inside. This is the thing: though they had produced 45Kg giant cauliflowers, they had the same nutritional value as a normal cauliflower. And with a fraction of the productivity per terrain of the conventional techniques. Eating those giant vegetables would not do much better to satiate anyone, but as Mexican researcher Luis Ruiz Noguez pointed, it would not make anyone thirsty at least.
And what about the secret formula for giant watery vegetables? It turns out it’s no secret at all. Giant pumpkins are an American tradition, and other vegetables can also be enlarged without much difficulty. It doesn’t have anything to do with astrology, not even with space irradiated seeds, but simply with special care the cultivation process. The vegetables are still not particularly useful to feed people, unfortunately.
The Chinese Giant Space Vegetables may perhaps have a “10% to 20%” added productivity, perhaps, but we would have to see a published scientific paper, or better yet, a commercial product, to trust that. Meanwhile, Arredondo also discovered that his closet mirror had a Jesus face. And that the aliens were in fact coming from the Hollow Earth.
Check more (in Spanish) on Luis Ruiz Noguez detailed article on this case: El “Enigma” de las Verduras Gigantes (with many priceless photos)

Afterwards we played charades they had never heard of it but we all had lots of fun!!!!

Most of you know of my "family" in Nanaimo Heather and Kirby and the three boys.....this is the youngest Zach who all the years I have known him have been about golf and he is now in his third year at Washington State on a scholarship and doing really well!!!!

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Highlighted by a career-best performance from junior Zach Anderson, the Washington State men's golf team finished seventh (+6, 870) at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, Sunday.
WSU shot even with par in the final round, ending the tournament 19 strokes back of host-school Michigan which took first place (-13, 851). Northwestern finished two strokes behind Michigan and took second place (-11, 853), while Alabama rounded out the top-three with a final score of 857 (-7).
Anderson, who shot 5-under par through three rounds, recorded a career-best three-round versus par score and finished in fifth place (211). In the final round, Anderson carded six birdies and shot 3-under par. The junior finished five strokes back of tournament-winner Lee Hodges of Alabama (-10, 206).

OK here I go!!!!

As I was up early I watched a live soccer game from England which finished just in time for me to head to the tennis courts for two hours of great tennis.....

Back home and guess what??   Another live soccer game from the UK followed immediately by another game!!!!!!!!

I then went and did some grocery shopping for my trip to the beach on Tuesday...apart from having my own bedroom and bathroom I have full use of the kitchen including access to the fridge and freezer, so I shall take most of my food.....

Thursday 2nd March 2017...........what a class!!!

Maggie and Giff who teach the students every Thursday asked if I could do their class tonight as they were at a family gathering and so I went to class at 6.00 pm with a good lesson plan..first of all they were each going to stand in front of the class and talk for 5 minutes, then we were going to play charades with chocolate as prizes but we did none of that.

In the first minute we got on to the topic of having children and for the next 90 minutes which went by in a flash we just all sat around the table and talked about the Catholic church, sex education, birth control  and divorce..with every one contributing..it was simply an amazing class because they were doing all of this in English...I am so very proud of them and humbled to be able to be with them!!!!

I enjoyed this article and thought you might too!!

Mysteries of elephant sleep revealed

Wild African elephants sleep for the shortest time of any mammal, according to a study.
Scientists tracked two elephants in Botswana to find out more about the animals' natural sleep patterns.
Elephants in zoos sleep for four to six hours a day, but in their natural surroundings the elephants rested for only two hours, mainly at night.
The elephants, both matriarchs of the herd, sometimes stayed awake for several days.
During this time, they travelled long distances, perhaps to escape lions or poachers.
They only went into rapid eye movement (REM, or dreaming sleep, at least in humans) every three or four days, when they slept lying down rather than on their feet.

Prof Paul Manger of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, said this makes elephant sleep unique.
"Elephants are the shortest sleeping mammal - that seems to be related to their large body size," he told BBC News.
"It seems like elephants only dream every three to four days. Given the well-known memory of the elephant this calls into question theories associating REM sleep with memory consolidation."

Elephants living in captivity have been widely studied.
To find out more about their sleeping habits in the wild, Prof Manger and his research team fitted the scientific equivalent of a fitness tracker under the skin of the animals' trunks.
The device was used to record when the elephants were sleeping, based on their trunk staying still for five minutes or more.
The two elephants were also fitted with a gyroscope to assess their sleeping position.
Both elephants were followed for five weeks, giving new insights into their natural sleep patterns.
"We had the idea that elephants should be the shortest sleeping mammal because they're the largest," said Prof Manger.
"Why this occurs, we're not really sure. Sleep is one of those really unusual mysteries of biology, that along with eating and reproduction, it's one of the biological imperatives. We must sleep to survive."

Dreaming sleep

Generally, smaller-bodied mammals sleep for longer than larger ones.
For example, sloths sleep for around 14 hours a day, while humans sleep for around 8 hours.
How elephants survive on so little sleep remains a mystery.
The researchers are planning follow-up studies on more elephants, including males.
They also want to find out more about REM sleep in elephants.
REM sleep is believed to be critical in laying down memories.
It is a type of sleep seen across the animal kingdom, in mammals and birds and even lizards.
Most mammals go into REM sleep every day.

Wednesday 1st March 2017....Rabbits, rabbits, rabbits!!!!

You should know by now to start the day with the three words above for good luck for the month(according to my MUM!!!)

This morning i spent most of my time walking around town doing chores and then at 1.00 pm off to poker where my winning ways I am happy to say continue....it was only 10 pesos BUT a win is a win!!!
At my English class tonight I printed off the below article and we read it and talked about it...

What is the meaning of Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday: AshesRoman Catholic churches of the Latin Rite use this service to prepare church members to better appreciate the death and resurrection of Christ through self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial. Ashes from the burned palms of the preceding year's Palm Sunday are blessed. With these ashes, the priest marks a cross on the foreheads of worshipers, saying, "Remember, man, that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return" (Genesis 3:19 KJV). Besides showing sorrow for their sins, those who honor Ash Wednesday add an additional meaning; the need to prepare for a holy death.

Origin of Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday has a non-Christian origin and was accepted into the beliefs of the Catholic Church at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The council also settled upon the 40-day fast period as the standard length to celebrate Lent.  During this time period Constantine’s goal was to combine pagans and Christians into a peaceable unit within the Roman kingdom.
Even after the Council of Nicaea the beginning start date of Lent was still questioned. In 601 Pope Gregory moved the beginning of Lent from the fourth Sunday of the year to Ash Wednesday, 46 days before Easter. This changed allowed for 40 days of fasting with six Sundays counted as feast days, for a total of 46 days for Lent. Pope Gregory also instituted the tradition of marking parishioners forehead’s with ashes in the shape of a cross.

Is Ash Wednesday Mentioned in the Bible?

Ash Wednesday is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, however, from Biblical times, sprinkling oneself with ashes has been a mark of sorrow for sin. Several times the Bible mentions people repenting in dust and ashes; for example: Mordecai (Esther 4:1), Job (Job 42:6), the inhabitants of Nineveh (Jonah 3:5-6), and Daniel (Daniel 9:3-4). Repentance in dust and ashes often was accompanied with fasting during Bible times.

?

Should Christians Celebrate Ash Wednesday?

As mentioned before, the Bible directly talks about repentance and fasting, but doesn’t mention Ash Wednesday specifically. Therefore, Christians are under no obligation to celebrate the holiday. The important fact to remember is that Christians should be ready and willing to repent, fast, and focus on God throughout the year and not just during the Lenten season.
Additionally, Ash Wednesday is not a day of holy obligation, although Roman Catholics attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten season. The churches of the Anglican Communion, as well as some other Protestant churches observe Ash Wednesday. Eastern Rite churches, however, do not observe Ash Wednesday, their Lent begins on the preceding Monday.

Maria Luiz came to class with the cross on her forehead but it got a bit smudged....
Don't they look delightful...Itzel on the far left told the class tonight that for her good deed of paying it forward she has 15 friends meeting this Saturday at her house they are going to buy food and water and take it and feed the people who will be waiting outside the hospital doors...does not that make your heart feel so wonderful!!!

After class I was invited by my students from two years ago to attend a birthday party for Rhonnie their teacher from last year, it was Rhonnie's birthday...so I was so happy to be invited and they are such a great credit to their town.......and for me on a personal level such a pleasure to be there!!!
