This post is for Thursday 13th November.
Another beautiful morning and I was on the road by 9am and arrived into Santa Barbara and met Stella for lunch at the campus where she is taking classes. What a great view from the Campus steps…
Santa Barbara is a beautiful city, very clean and open and the small town where Stella lives is called Carpenteria, about 10 miles further south.
We walked through the local farmer’s market and bought some amazingly fresh fruit and veggies. Whilst having supper the radio was on and thus began the horrible saga of the huge fire that was spreading in one of the very affluent areas above the town centre of Santa Barbara.
Around 5.30pm the fire started in the foothills and because of almost hurricane type winds was spreading so quickly.
Stella received a call from a friend whose home was in that area and he was advised to evacuate his home. Apparently he went around some friend’s house to stay and they in turn had to leave, so Stella invited him to stay with her.
How sad and disturbing it was to meet this man who does not know if his house will be standing in the morning. He is in surprisingly good spirits about the whole situation and was even making jokes about what he brought from his home. He only had minutes to pack up so he threw in a bag his computer, his medications and strawberries from the fridge!!!!
We all spent a couple of hours glued to the TV and so far his home is safe.
Stella and I then took a drive to see from a distance the flames.
My night photos still need work. This photo from the TV shows some of the destruction of over 70 homes burnt to the ground so far.
We are safe where we are but await the news in the morning of the outcome of this horrendous happening.
I plan to be in Carpenteria for a few days so I will keep you all informed..
