Wednesday 19th June 2013….non stop day!!

Another great day and a busy one..I went to pick up Paola we have a regular Wednesday morning date but there was no answer when I went to her house and no answer on the cell phone so I do not know what happened to her.

I had a few chores to do down town and took the time to take these local photos!!!

I had to go to a local photo shop to get a photo for a medical plan I am applying for and these kids were in the studio!!!!

DSCF0031

Just your typical street corner!!

Back home for a quick lunch and then took Linda and Guy’s van in for some new tires and left the van there while I went to poker and my “BUDDIES” if you can call them that took me to the cleaners for over 300 pesos!!!!!

I then drove the van to L & G’s house and then walked back to my place a total of 12km.

I was home by 6pm and what I love about living in a Mexican neighborhood is……..the garbage guys come ring a bell and you take out your trash.  You need propane for your tank you call and with in 20 minutes they are there. Twice a week the water delivery guy knocks on the door.  A man on a motor cycle comes around everyday selling milk in two big urns…of course the bakery is only two blocks away

DSCF0039

.Another man comes around selling tortillas…and then not 50 yards from my casita is a house where the front room is converted into a beauty salon so I walked there to get a haircut….she did a wonderful job the best paid haircut I have ever had and the cost 35 pesos …  not even 3 dollars…if I was not cute before I sure am now…right???   RIGHT????

Daddy , how was I born?
A little boy goes to his father and asks 'Daddy, how was I born?' The father answers, 'Well, son, I guess one day you
will need to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe.. We sneaked into a secluded room and googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said:

Tuesday 18th June 2013…..what a beautiful sunny day!!!

especially for my first tennis game in a week it was so good to be back on the courts again…after tennis I had some chores to do around town and then came home for lunch and just happened to watch the final of the U 21 European soccer game being played in Israel.

Then I did something I have not done for a while I went on the roof and relaxed with my book and drinks and spent a couples of hours there…then it was time for chores there is nobody else in the other 2 houses in the complex so I went and watered all the outdoor plants…took a while but I enjoyed it.

Just a quiet evening at home some computer work, some television and some sorting out through the clothes closet.  I know this is an exciting life……..

Monday 17th June 2013…..big hike day!!

Had to do some chores with Linda and Guy’s van so I was out of the house early..I then went to pick up a friend and drive him to the bus station and home by noon….got packed up and did the 21 km road walk..I average about 5.3km an hour but have decided not to do this walk again it is just too much traffic, noise and too busy so will have to search out a new route on the back roads will do that this week.

Even so I did enjoy my time lots of thinking…. mental planning and some decisions….I think I am a little bit smart as my training for the Camino is still almost a year away but I am training at a much higher altitude and also a much higher  temperature so this will all help.

After watering my plants I had a good long soak in the tub, a nice meal and just finished watching the hockey game.

Today is crazy day in SMA…the Locos parade….. below tells you a little about it.

San Miguel de Allende is said to have more fiestas and parades than anywhere else in Mexico. When there is a period on the calendar with no celebrations, they make one up. So it is with El Dia de los Locos, Day of the Crazies, held each year in mid-June.

In the 17th and 18th centuries Catholic priests introduced San Pascual Bailon as the patron saint of field workers and kitchen workers. The newly converted Mexicans celebrated his “day” on May 17 by decorating themselves with tools and other symbols of their labor and dancing to the sounds of pagan flutes and drums.

To keep the paraders and observers separated, some paraders were dressed as scarecrows and their characteristic movements were described as “loco,” i.e., crazy. Somewhere along the way, paraders dressed as clowns replaced the field and kitchen workers, though the music and the dances stayed the same.

San Antonio de Padua’s day was celebrated on June 13th and it had its own dances. But the dances of San Pascual Bailon were so popular that they were also used for San Antonio’s celebration. Gradually the two celebrations melded and are now celebrated as one on the first Sunday following June 13.

Nowadays, neighborhood groups or groups of workers join together to make elaborate special costumes. Some ride on the back of trucks decorated as floats and some march the route. Almost all have bands or recorded music which competes in a glorious cacophony that is so characteristic of Mexico. Early on, the marchers handed out pears to the people along the parade route, but now each group throws candy into the crowd, causing even more noisy mayhem.

Day of the Crazies is Mexico at its best – happy families making noise in a blend of religious and pagan celebrations. Just one of the reasons San Miguel is now in the top ten of tourist destinations worldwide!

Cannot capture in words or by photos the magnitude of this event I have never seen so many spectators and participants it was truly amazing.  I picked up Paola and was loaded with drinks and food and we found a good vantage point…enjoy the photos and try to imagine watching with ear splitting music and kid’s laughter and joy as they grab for the 1000’s of candies that were thrown their way!!

Saturday 15th June 2013….Saturday you know what that means!!!!

Well usually it means a big sports day starting off with 2 hours of wonderful tennis but one of the foursome could not play today and playing 2 on 1 is not fun so as I am the low man on the totem pole I volunteered to sit out and let Alfredo and Loren play singles….so no tennis at all this week….I did not like that!!!!

So plan B….have a nice breakfast whilst watching a live European soccer game…..around noon I had to go pick up Linda and Guy’s van so I decided to walk to the service shop about 7km..it was a good walk and I got to see things I normally zoom by on the scooter….I liked this photo..

DSCF9963

I was back home early afternoon in time to watch the second semi final of the soccer games……..and then decided to go do my canyon hike which is always invigorating and enjoyable…the local kids outside my door have their own game going on!!!

Now it is 7pm and I am showered, fed and ready for game 2 of the Stanley Cup hockey finals.

Painting the Church

There was a Scottish painter named Smokey Macgregor who was very interested in making a penny where he could, so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee bit further.
As it happened, he got away with this for some time, but eventually the Baptist Church decided to do a big restoration job on the outside of one of their biggest buildings.
Smokey put in a bid, and, because his price was so low, he got the job.
So he set about erecting the scaffolding and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine..
Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and the rain poured down washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint.
Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty,
so he got down on his knees and cried:
"Oh, God, Oh God, forgive me; what should I do?"
And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke..
(you're going to love this)
"Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!"

Just another day..

Funny how things work out..today I had to go on an errand in Ramona and close by is this great farmer’s market store, where I stopped and bought some fruit and vegetables. One item that I bought, I think for the first time, were some fresh peas in their shell. Brought them home and sat out on the deck overlooking the ocean and shelled peas. I have not done this since I was a young kid and I would sit on the stoop with my Grandma and shell the peas.kkkki 003

So after supper, the peas were great, I check my e mails and there I find this story below…small world.

Wanted to share this with you…
