CINCO DE MAYO, A DAY TO HAVE FUN
Just about everyone has heard of Cinco De Mayo, but not everyone knows what it means. It actually means “the 5th of May” and this is when fiestas and celebrations run abundantly.
Many people think Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence day, but that date is actually September 16. On that date in 1810 Mexico became independent from Spanish rule.
Cinco de Mayo acknowledges the Mexican Army’s defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla which took place on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo became popular in the United States in the1950’s through the 1960’s. This was partially due to the “Good Neighbour Policy” where the United States reached out to their neighbouring countries.
Cinco de Mayo is actually celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico. It is more of a Mexican American celebration. To many Mexicans today; it is just another day. Many places celebrate Cinco De Mayo where the population is not primarily Hispanic. It just gives us another excuse to party, eat delicious Mexican food and drink margaritas. A study shows that in 1998 the official number of celebrations of Cinco de Mayo was 120. Today, there are at least 150-200 official celebrations.
Cinco de Mayo brings much revenue to the beer and liquor industry. Ads are abundant the whole week before May 5. It is the consensus of many that Cinco de Mayo brings Latino and non-Latinos together to embrace each others culture; and in today’s world with immigration reform, we need this.
Yesterday again was a miss mash of weather and I stayed inside doing some reading, computer work, work for Sara and cooking…
The RCMP boat came over and dropped some forms off for Sara….
…..again around 4.30pm after Sara finished work the sun came out so we went off in the boat.
By Jove I think she is an English”man”….
We were entertained by this sea otter…
Stopped the boat in search for the elusive glass bottle..
the search begins!!!
The weather changed just as we were arriving home….
This morning the sun was shining early and these were taken on the front deck at 8.30am this morning…
More tomorrow….
