Wednesday 31st July 2019.....this month went by so quickly!!!!

Friends.......about 25 years ago when I worked in the family run restaurant in Nanaimo a lot of my customers were regulars and I got to know them quite well and made some good friends...

One such couple was Heather and Mel, they actually had their pre wedding dinner at the restaurant......

Over the years we have remained friends and a few years ago I invested some of my money with an Insurance company that Mel worked for.....these funds have been doing well for me over the years.

This afternoon I went and had a visit with Mel and we talked about my investments and some strategies for me to employ in the future.

What I have not told told you is that Mel is blind!!!

A little history about him he was one of the first blind lawyers to graduate in British Columbia .....he is an incredible piano player and all round decent man and his favourite story when someone asks him how he and Heather met is to be so serious and say, we actually met on a blind date!!!!

He is an amazing man!!

Another couple I met in the restaurant was Pat and Chris....they came in  one night I had never seen them before.. we chatted a little and then they came in every night for a long time......

Their story...Pat was a retired Nurse and Chris a retired police office from Toronto...when they retired they decided they wanted to move to the Island, they had never been here before, so they bravely sent all their possessions on a container to the island and took the cross country train....they were staying in a motel close by whilst they looked for a home..

It turns out that in 1972 whilst I was a police officer in Bermuda we took a soccer trip to Toronto and I stayed with a police man and his wife during the trip and this same officer used to be Chris’s partner...small world....

We also have remained friends through all these years.

This afternoon after I saw Mel I went and picked up Chris and we went out for coffee and a nice catch up chat!!

I did have many great experiences in the restaurant and I got to meet and serve Diana Krall, the famous jazz performer....I served the nanny to one of Winston Churchill’s children...I served a man who had served in the French Foreign Legion...I served Glenn Anderson a famous hockey player and I served this amazing woman who competed for Canada in the 1936 Olympics in long jump!!!  I shall also never forget the couple that came in the restaurant only one time, never saw them before or after, he was in a wheel chair and they left me a 55 dollar tip!!!!

At 5pm went again to pickle ball and I am really enjoying my time there...everyone is so friendly and the level of play is good I get a great workout....

The history of Pickle Ball..

Rep. Joel Pritchard

1965 – After playing golf one Saturday during the summer, Joel Pritchard, congressman from Washington State and Bill Bell, successful businessman, returned to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island, WA (near Seattle) to find their families sitting around with nothing to do. The property had an old badminton court so Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment and could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. At first they placed the net at badminton height of 60 inches and volleyed the ball over the net.As the weekend progressed, the players found that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface and soon the net was lowered to 36 inches. The following weekend, Barney McCallum was introduced to the game at Pritchard’s home. Soon, the three men created rules, relying heavily on badminton. They kept in mind the original purpose, which was to provide a game that the whole family could play together.

We all watched the second evening of the American debates this evening....

It was a wonderful time and when we got back Heather kindly bathed Boomer and then it was all too much for him!!!!

I keep in touch with one of my buddies from my time in Bermuda and he went to a reunion on England last week and sent me this photo...

I know most of these old timers from the 1970’s!!!

Monday 29th July 2019.......a slow day!!

Spent a lot of time today driving around to various Government offices..I won’t bore you with the details but it was work that needed to be done.

The weather is superb sunny and warm and I took Boomer for a long walk down to the beach this afternoon...he loves it down there!!

On my way to pickle ball this afternoon I stopped and took these photos....

This is the condo complex where in 2000 I bought a condo....

This one...

I paid 65000 dollars and owned and lived in it for six years and sold it in 2006, the year I retired, for 165000 dollars...a good investment!!!

Pickle ball was great, two hours of non stop games......

After dinner tonight we all played cards for a while....Heather’s Mum and Sister go back home tomorrow so the house will be quiet again...

Sunday 28th July 2019...waterfalls!!!!

This was a really nice stay the young couple are living their dream as best they can and have made a great little Airbnb out of their second bedroom!!!!!

I did some research and decided it was going to be waterfall day...so I got some food and drinks from the local store and headed out aiming to get to this waterfall!!!

The drive was wonderful....

And here just imagine a mother and baby deer crossing the highway because that is what happened I had to slow to almost a stop!!!

Then I drove through the heart of Strathcona National park, along the Butte River....

I reached the parking lot of Little Myra falls and a short hike to what I think is one of the more spectacular sights on Vancouver Island!!!!

Really could not do it justice with a camera but enjoy...

I was able to find a rugged path almost down to the lake and look up!!!!!

An amazing place ..I stayed for a while just soaking up the beauty!!!

On the way back I stopped here..

Again a short hike down to the deep gorge and suspension bridge!!

My second double rainbow sighting in ten days!!!

A long drive back but all on a super highway and arrived home around 4 pm..

Today Ruth is 92 years young and as a surprise gift Heather and her sister Kathy treated Ruth to a live musical performance of Mamma Mia at a local theatre....they really enjoyed the show I am told!!

Then Kirby made a really nice steak dinner and just a lot of fun and laughter!!

This was a very special weekend!!!

Saturday 27th July 2019.....up Island!!!

I found out yesterday at the pickle ball courts they they play seven days a week some people go around 8.30am and others around 5pm......so I was there this morning around 8.45am....

With six courts there really is no waiting and I joined a foursome and played seven games..changing partners each game....it was great fun...a really good work out and I even bumped into two of my former soccer team mates from about 12 years ago..great to see them again!!!

Came home and took Boomer for a walk and we saw this baby in a neighbourhood yard!!!

had some lunch and then relaxed for a while before I set out on my mini road trip!!

I have known Norma and Croft for many years they live up island in Campbell River..we used to meet up occasionally in Mexico in our motor homes and Croft helped me with a few techie problems with Ramona, my former RV....

Sadly Norma passed away four months ago it was very sudden and unexpected and Croft decided to wait to the date of Norma’s birthday to have her celebration of life and it was this afternoon...I was so glad I could attend and visit with a croft for a short while and meet his family for the first time....

His son and DIL and two Grand daughters!!

It was a lovely celebration!!!

I am staying in an Airbnb tonight, a really nice young couple with a lovely small home...everything is great especially soaking in this...

I’d think there may be waterfall stories tomorrow before I head back home!!

Food for thought...

Later on Heather, Mum Ruth and sister Kathy and I went downtown and had a walk on the sea wall....it is lovely area and almost in the centre of town..free parking and nice paths!!!

Kathy ..Ruth...Heather..

Part of the afternoon I relaxed and did some trip planning before I went off to play pickle ball..

These courts are really new and nice. The people friendly and I enjoyed the games..I have not played since last year but it comes back easily and I still believe it is a better work out that tennis, though of course I still prefer tennis...

Played five games and it was fun!!

Home for a shower and then Heather and Kirby had cooked a delay dinner for us all and afterwards we sat out side on the deck playing cards till it got dark!!

I take this baby for a walk every morning and evening,,,Boomer!!!
