NATIONAL DOUGHNUT (DONUT) DAY

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day.  This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.
In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army.  It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe.  Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.
The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers.  American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”  A more standard spelling is donut.

On this day, many bakeries and coffee shops in the United States offer doughnut deals to their customers.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Celebrate the day by enjoying your favorite doughnut.  Use #NationalDonutDay or #NationalDoughnutDay when using social media.
HISTORY
National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I.  This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army.  The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression.

What I did not know that those lovely ladies from the salvation Army, you all know I was raised in the Salvation Army, were involved!!!!
Had a good sleep but i had a really long day ahead of me and i was up and on the road by 6.15 am...saw a lovely sunrise, I do not see many of them, tried to take a photo but did not turn out.
After only a few miles I was heading out of here

They also drive very fast...I did not pass one single vehicle all day!!!!!
After about 5 hours on Interstate 10 I was off on the secondary highways still posted 75 m.p.h. but single lane and hardly any traffic a pleasure to drive!!!
I made a few stops to stretch and cool down and this was one of the places..

As you can see a long drive but you know what it went by quite quickly..Little Bluey is a joy to drive and I had lots of drinks, light food and fruit and I stopped every so often, even stopped and had a 30 minute nap.....
I also gained an hour and arrived at my own private little casita in Laredo around 6.30 pm!!!
Met the lovely owner Lolis who showed me around, she even had some food in the fridge for me...

Can you believe the Ellie has another elephant for a friend for two days!!!!!

You can imagine I was in here in a flash so refreshing!!!!!
Now this is a first for me......when you lift the toilet lid a light comes on....
and then dims and goes out after about 20 seconds!!!!!  What next!!!
I am a tad tired so after this it will be time for my book and bed......

I am staying here tomorrow night and tomorrow I plan to walk across the border and see if I can get my Tourist Visa saving time and hassle on Sunday!!!

Always wondered why those American GIs of World War I were called doughboys. And the connection with the Salvation Army ladies during that time. At the beginning of World War II, my parents and grandparents took some photos of the Salvation Army ladies preparing and handing out sandwiches at the train stations to newly-drafted soldiers on their way to Fort Benning and Fort Stewart in Georgia for training. WWII was bad for everyone; I still keep my family's leftover books of ration stamps for sugar and other things during the war; most domestic goods were converted to the war effort. Dad said that every family had a vegetable garden in their yard because the US government canned most farm production for the troops so there was not much left in the grocery stores.

My goodness, Les! Do you see what's going on at London Bridge? When will this terrorism ever stop! God Bless the U.K.

P.S. The London Police are putting out tweets to cell phones, saying "run, hide, tell." At this minute, they are still hunting these people; trouble now at three locations.

That was a long drive today, too long for these old bones! We have always used the Columbia Crossing for a quick, efficient entry into Mexico.
